A look back at the Digital Community Roadshows
Taking the technology to the 13 islands May/June 2002

There were few days when the two "Blues Brothers" above required the sunglasses but what we missed in terms of sunshine was more than compensated for by the overwhelming response we received from the residents of the thirteen islands. You made us all feel so welcome and it was good to get a chance to talk to so many of you over the three week tour.

I hope we managed to answer most of your questions but if there is anything we missed or if we have not yet responded to a question, please contact the information service on 01546 604488 or send an email to dc@argyll-bute.gov.uk. A new Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section had been added to the site.

Although we hoped to meet many of you, we were taken by complete surprise at the large numbers visiting each event.  From the first day in An Tobar in Tobermory when we  were still setting up the equipment as the first visitors appeared (an hour before opening time!), to the tranquillity of our two days on Colonsay to finish. We have been astonished at the level of interest in the project and the enthusiasm shown by all of you.

Thanks to more than 1500 island residents who came along and asked the questions, typed a letter, took away a newly printed photograph, sent the emails,  found the cure on the web for the dying plants, found the "pocheen" sites,  mastered solitaire, laughed at the jokes, guessed Flora's birthday, or whatever you did when you visited the roadshow. We hope you found the experience useful. We certainly did. Much of the information gathered during the roadshows will directly inform our installation process and we will work closely with PC World Business to ensure the next few months are as pain free as possible.

As you will know by now, the project is based on social inclusion principles - what happens to the community when everyone has open access to the Internet and the technology. This inclusive nature covers all ages and perhaps the most rewarding of the shows was the extra event at the Tigh a Rudha retirement home on Tiree (see picture below). Residents and support staff had a chance to participate and we were so grateful for the invitation to come along  and demonstrate the equipment. A humbling experience - thanks to everyone at the home.

Special thanks to all the Council staff who helped with the Roadshows, to those wonderful B&B's across the islands  for making us feel at home, to the Cal Mac staff, Village Hall committees, Compaq and Microsoft for the prizes, Vodafone and BT for their support and the island residents for coming along and making it all worthwhile.
